MORE FOOD FOR SUPER HEROS

Ok, so here we go with more healthy info on two green superfoods – spirulina and chlorella.

Most people have heard of chlorella and spirulina, but they don’t really know the details of why these two are truly the best food sources on the planet. For example, did you know that, ounce per ounce, spirulina contains twelve times the digestible protein of beef? If you haven heard about spirulina before its time to wake up and open your eyes and ears, incorporating this to your daily diet could change your life!

Did you know that a phytochemical found in chlorella can actually rebuild nerve damage in the brain and nervous system? That’s why chlorella is being used in the recovery of patients with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

Were you aware that both chlorella and spirulina can actually reverse cancer in the human body? Both of these superfoods have been clinically shown to demonstrate stunning preventive and curative properties when it comes to all sorts of cancers.

And finally, did you know that these superfoods also contain a high content of essential fatty acids such as GLA that are routinely missing from the diets of most western diets and yet are critical for healthy brain function?

These are just a few of the benefits that you can look forward to from a daily intake and today you will find spirulina in any health food store. I recommend that you buy this superfood I powder or tablet form, this makes the intake easier for your body and the powder is easily used in smoothies, just mix your favorite fruit and ad a few teaspoons of powder. Or why not try my raw spirulina balls for a treat!

If you are interested in the nutritional breakdown of these two algae I can tell you that you will find high-quality complete protein that is more dense and more digestible than any animal-derived protein. (Chlorella is 58% protein), all the known B vitamins, including vitamin B 12 which is almost never found in plants, Vitamin C and E, macrominerals like calcium, magnesium, zinc, potassium, trace minerals, omega- fatty acids including GLA, mucopolysaccharides, beta-carotene, nucleic acids (RNA & DNA) and at last but not least chlorophyll.

Both chlorella and spirulina are microscopic plants that grow in fresh water. They’re actually called micro-algae, since they are microscopic forms of algae. And they’ve been around for quite some time: a few billion years. These are some of the earliest and simplest life forms on the planet, appearing way before any dinosaurs where stomping around our planet.

STUDYING THE SECRETS OF A LONG LIFE

Right now I’m sitting at a Bangkok cafe, yes I admit – I do have a coffee next to me, but my thoughts are with the macrobiotic diet, the diet that gives you a long life (macro = long or large, biotic = life). I’m on week 7 in my studies to become a holistic health coach and now we are learning the do’s and don’ts of this traditional Japanese lifestyle. It is all very interesting and I realize that my diet here in Asia is slowly going macrobiotic without any effort and as I have said before, I can both feel and see a dramatic difference in myself.

The dude in the photograph is Michio Kushi, he was the one who brought this ancient thinking over to the modern western world, America, and his life is an amazing story. If you are interested in learning more about this lifestyle I recommend you to have a look here and here. Remember to listen to your body and see the macrobiotic diet (this goes for any diet) as one way to a healthy life, there are no rules – just guidelines, and you need to figure what works for you.

ARE SOY PRODUCTS HEALTHY?

Meatless meatballs, soy latte, scrambled tofu, soy yoghurt – there is a lot of soy products on the shelves these days and it has become a part of many people’s daily diet. Soy products has definitely got the reputation of a health food and is marketed as a good source of protein and a healthy substitute for dairy. But is this really true or have we just become fooled by clever marketing? How did such a ‘healthy food’ emerge from a product that in 1913 was listed in the American USDA handbook, not as a food but as an industrial by-product?

So what are they not telling us?
Soy contains a high number of phytoestrogens. These are an oestrogen-like chemical which is produced by plants. A study estimated that babies who are being fed a soy-based formula are being fed the equivalent of around five birth control pills worth of oestrogen every day. This amount of oestrogen is thought to be responsible for the increased amount of learning disabilities and cases of ADD/ADHD. It is also thought to be responsible for the fact that girls are now going through puberty from as young as eight or nine years old. The consumption of soy products is proven to be especially harmful for men as it has been known to cause them to form breasts and its reported to lower or even destroy their sex drive. Studies also showed that it causes men to lose arm, chest and leg hair. Consuming large amounts of soy products have been connected with cases of breast cancer and studies show thyroid dysfunction among many other alarming diseases.

That being said, not all soy products are unhealthy. Soy products are classified into two main groups: fermented and unfermented. The fermented products are the good guys, soy sauce, miso, tamari, tempeh and properly prepared Chinese tofu.
Examples of unfermented products are soy milk or any other dairy substitute and meat substitutes like quorn and most tofu brands.

To make things worse there is Genetically Modified soy, and this is to be avoided at all costs! The hazards of GM are some of the worst innovations of modern day bio-technology. Not only are all GM products unhealthy to humans and animals but also to the normal plants that grow in the surrounding area. Due to the natural process of winds causing cross-pollination neighboring fields of what were once natural variations of plants are getting mutated.

Its important to know that Over 90% of all soy products from america are genetically modified and the american soy beans also have one of the highest percentages of pesticides.

Today you will find GM-soy products presents in up to 70% of all food products found in US supermarkets, including cereals, breads, pasta and most meat (as animals are fed GM-soy feed). Im just saying – read your labels people and look for organic.

Makes you think again huh?!

I hope I have cleared up some questions concerning soy and it’s potential hazards. To sum it up briefly here is my advice, eat fermented soy products and enjoy its benefits, keep intake of unfermented soy products low and the most important thing to remember is to stay clear of all genetically modified products!
